Well, time slips away. “All things change, and we change with them,” as antiquity will have it. It has come to my notice that this website hasn’t been updated since 2017. The simple explanation for this is that fashioning words into slabs of prose for general consumption has ceased to constitute my occupational bread and butter.

Anyone who does anything seriously enough falls prey to an element of déformation professionnelle. In all probability mine screams from the page in everything I published as a journalist, although I have resisted any temptation to put this idea to the test. This short update is intended as a full-stop, as well as a justification for keeping the site alive, but I have avoided re-reading old articles, far less re-curating them or seeking out (and deleting) anything that might turn out to have aged poorly. Why not put it out of commission entirely? There are blood, sweat, tears and much else besides in this body of work, this digital record of past toil, and I feel it deserves to live somewhere. Better here than in my own faultier circuitry. Hopefully, anyone who decides to jump in and read old entries will find them illuminating, true, witty, wise, and so on.

In reality, I have continued to work as an editor – in corporate communications and broadcast journalism, and on book projects – and I have plans to do other writing. But this will happen in other places and on other platforms, and most likely in a different vein to what exists here.
